good question - i think the attempts to redirect are often self-serving, it's convenient if i'm not in the uncomfortable position of having to deal with this person's feelings - not that one has to necessarily "deal" with them, but people often feel an obligation - it's not always selfish, sometimes certainly, convenience, can we lighten the mood, have fun? but also, want to help, thinking you're supposed to distract, sometimes that seems logical or natural, some people, probably myself included, are not so skilled at knowing when a redirect would be the right thing for the right person, or whether it's entirely the wrong thing, maybe folks should just stop feeling obligated one way or another, and better comprehend the moment, maybe the person just needs to go through a thing, isn't looking for distraction
