i thought love was a ledger
with columns that matched
thought i could deposit just
enough kindness to cover a
future withdrawal thought if
i poured oceans into cupped
hands the palms might learn
a shape of holding & maybe
even become a bowl t’catch
a bit of rain for me someday
my love became a language
nobody bothered to learn &
my generosity a well visited
only when their own throat
was dust i am a bridge i am
a bridge i am a bridge which
everyone crossed & no one
thought to check the ropes
for weather now i carry cold
truth as a stone in m’mouth
you will give your heart as a
compass for others but still
spend years lost within your
own wilderness devastating
geography is to find out the
map of your love’s drawn in
vanishing ink & still still you
must climb with what’s left
